The browser has been the focal point of self-protection online, with options to block cookies, purge your browsing history or not record it in the first place, and turn off ad tracking. Browsers and privacy: The best options, and how they can help But it’s also worrying to be profiled extensively, which is what browser privacy seeks to reduce. You should be most worried about when you are personally identifiable. (Over the years, laws have tried to prevent such redlining, but there are creative ways around it, such as installing a tracking device in your car “to save you money” and identify those who may be higher risks but haven’t had the accidents yet to prove it.) Certainly, governments want that personal data, in the name of control or security. So may insurers and healthcare organizations seeking to filter out undesirable customers. That’s common for business-oriented websites whose advertisers want to reach specific people with purchasing power.Ĭriminals may want that data too. They can then correlate all the data they have from your devices to you specifically, and use that to target you individually. When companies do want that personal information - your name, gender, age, address, phone number, company, titles, and more - they will have you sign up. Neither do criminals and organizations seeking to commit fraud or manipulate an election. For that need, they don’t care who the person actually is. Marketers and advertisers are looking for certain kinds of people, and they use profiles to do so. Most websites and services don’t actually know it’s you at their site, just a browser associated with a lot of characteristics that can then be turned into a profile. When speaking of online privacy, it’s important to understand what is typically tracked. It’s not a comforting report! (Click any image in this story to enlarge it.) Understanding online privacy Safari’s Privacy Monitor feature shows you how many trackers the browser has blocked, and who exactly is trying to track you. On my most-used computer, I’m averaging about 80 tracking deflections per week - a number that has happily decreased from about 150 a year ago. It is pretty disconcerting to use, as it reveals just how many tracking attempts it thwarted in the last 30 days, and exactly which sites are trying to track you and how often. CNN, for example, had 36 running when I checked recently.Īpple’s Safari 14 browser introduced the built-in Privacy Monitor that really shows how much your privacy is under attack today. Trackers are the latest silent way to spy on you in your browser. And there are many new ways to monitor you that didn’t exist in 1999: always-listening agents like Amazon Alexa and Apple Siri, Bluetooth beacons in smartphones, cross-device syncing of browsers to provide a full picture of your activities from every device you use, and of course social media platforms like Facebook that thrive because they are designed for you to share everything about yourself and your connections so you can be monetized. The technology to monitor everything you do has only gotten better.

Publicly traded business development companiesĪnother way for a retail investor to gain exposure to private debt is through a business development company. However, investors may be required to pay fees of as much as 2% of the assets under management and 20% of any profits to these wealth managers. Professional wealth managers can be attractive because of their decades of experience in investing. Some well-known firms that have private credit funds include Blackstone and Ares Management, both of which also engage in private equity. High-net-worth individuals may be able to invest in private credit by hiring a wealth management firm. Investing with professional wealth managers However, there are some ways that a retail investor can gain exposure. Private credit is traditionally dominated by institutional investors. This could lead to a correction in private credit markets, causing returns to suddenly decline. Sometimes, when an asset class undergoes a sudden boom, there is a risk that people are paying more for the asset than it is worth. These firms often charge management fees as high as 2% of the assets under management. Most investors in private credit retain an asset management firm that specializes in private credit. Private credit funds are inherently illiquid because contracts take several years or even decades to mature and investors usually are barred from cashing out prematurely. Investing in private credit comes with several risks, including: There are now more ways than ever for individuals who are interested in investing in private credit. The private credit industry has boomed during the past two decades. This can make private credit less risky than private equity. In the event that a borrower declares bankruptcy, the company is almost always obligated to pay its creditors before it pays its equity holders. This means that as long as the borrower does not default, lenders know the returns they will receive. Because of the long-term nature of the investment, private credit tends to be less correlated with the short-term ups and downs of public markets.īorrowers and lenders usually agree on a set repayment plan with predetermined interest rates when arranging a private credit agreement. Private credit investments can take several years, if not decades, to fully mature. Many investors use private credit as a way to diversify their holdings. Private credit investment products attracts investors for several reasons, including: Institutional investors such as pension funds and endowment in particular have flocked to private credit, as have some retail investors. Much of the growth has been in reaction to the more stringent lending standards that regulators forced on banks after the 2007-09 financial crisis. The private credit industry, part of the broader universe of alternative investments, has boomed over the past two decades, growing from $42 billion in global assets under management in 2000 to $1.1 trillion in 2021, according to consulting firm PwC. Once the Russian forces had been held off, the Allies decided recover their guns. Nevertheless, the Allies managed to group together and held on to Balaklava. Initially it looked as if a Russian victory was imminent as they gained control of some of the ridges surrounding the port, therefore controlling the Allied guns. On 25th October 1854 the Russian army led by Prince Menshikov launched an assault on the British base at Balaklava. The Allied forces decided to lay siege to the port of Sevastapol. The focal point of this confrontation was the important strategic naval base of Sevastopol. During the following year the Battle of Balaklava took place, beginning in September when Allied troops arrived in Crimea. The Crimean War was a conflict which broke out in October 1853 between the Russians on one side and an alliance of British, French, Ottoman and Sardinian troops on the other. The calamitous charge was to be remembered for both its bravery and tragedy. The order for the cavalry charge proved catastrophic for the British cavalrymen: a disastrous mistake riddled with misinformation and miscommunication. The charge against Russian forces was part of the Battle of Balaclava, a conflict making up a much larger series of events known as the Crimean War. These words were made famous by Alfred Lord Tennyson in his poem, ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’, and refer to that fateful day on 25th October 1854 when around six hundred men led by Lord Cardigan rode into the unknown. Hadid was the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize, in 2004. Several of her buildings were still under construction at the time of her death, including the Daxing International Airport in Beijing, and the Al Wakrah Stadium (now Al Janoub) in Qatar, a venue for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Some of her awards have been presented posthumously, including the statuette for the 2017 Brit Awards. Her major works include the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympics, the Broad Art Museum, Rome's MAXXI Museum, and the Guangzhou Opera House. She was described by The Guardian as the "Queen of Curves ", who "liberated architectural geometry, giving it a whole new expressive identity". In search of an alternative system to traditional architectural drawing, and influenced by Suprematism and the Russian avant-garde, Hadid adopted painting as a design tool and abstraction as an investigative principle to "reinvestigate the aborted and untested experiments of Modernism to unveil new fields of building." Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Hadid studied mathematics as an undergraduate and then enrolled at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in 1972. Four decades after the channel’s launch and long after it stopped playing them, music videos still complement songs, create mythologies, and cause chatter and controversy. The internet soon stepped in to fill the void. The format proved so durable that when MTV decided to switch things up and devote its air time to game shows, reality TV, and scripted series, thus shutting down the primary pipeline for these promos, artists still kept making them. Entire genres and subgenres - from hip-hop to grunge to boy-band pop to nu metal - became part of the mainstream. The network revolutionized the music industry, inspired a multitude of copycat programming, made many careers, and broke more than a few. Virtually everyone knew what a music video was, and they wanted their MTV. At this point, viewers might have a few questions, like: Is this like a radio station on TV? What is a “VJ”? And what the hell is a “music video”?Ī year later, no one was asking that last question. This wasn’t a news channel it was “Music Television.” If they kept tuning in, they’d see clips and hear VJs talk about bringing you the latest in music videos. And then they’d hear a voiceover, with all the smooth patter of an FM disc jockey: “Ladies and gentlemen, rock & roll.” Cue power chords, and a flag with a network logo - something called MTV - that rapidly changed colors and patterns. The familiar sight of Neil Armstrong exiting his lunar module and walking on the moon would fill the TV screen. In the wee hours of August 1st, 1981, someone flipping through their channels might have come across the image of a rocket blasting into space. |
